TURNCOUPLE® Assembly

TURNCOUPLE® Assembly

You’re looking at the new TURNCOUPLE® assembly, a unique way to connect and disconnect the stiff, difficult hoses used on boats. The TURNCOUPLE® assembly facilitates coping with several common boat maintenance problems:
  • Compliance with federal and state wastewater discharge regulations
  • Connection and disconnection of water, wastewater bilge, lubrication and fuel lines for maintenance, winterizing or emergency repair
  • Removal of clogged bilge or head hose for cleaning, and reconnection
  • Removal and replacement of macerator, bilge or other pumps
  • Allowing an emergency alternate raw water intake for the engine or other cooling system
  • Letting macerator or other large utility pumps be used as emergency bilge pump by switching hoses
  • Deck fitting removal and reconnection for rebedding
  • Checking and lubricating seacocks
  • Easy installation and replacement of hoses

This is not a quick-release device. The TURNCOUPLE® assembly uses common threads in a unique way, to produce a reliable, simple and efficient product.

How Does It Work?

The TURNCOUPLE® assembly works like a turnbuckle: it tightens on two threaded adapters simultaneously by rotating a coupler between them.
Unlike a turnbuckle, these threads are National Pipe Tapered, providing a firm mechanical seal when properly tightened. The assembly has been tested to
hold up to 100 psi of water pressure, hand-tight.<p>Opposite the end that mates with the coupler, each
adapter has a unique two-barb design which fits into marine hoses and provides a superior connection between adapter and hose with
space for two hose clamps. The right adapter optionally comes with a threaded male end. Threaded components of the system are compatible
with other commercially available NPT threaded fittings and devices of the same size.

Each fitting in the TURNCOUPLE® system has a perforated flange so the assembly can be locked together for additional security. The perforations accept a pin spanner for use in tight spaces where a wrench might not fit.

What Are The Benefits?

  • The TURNCOUPLE® Assembly connects and tightens two adapters by rotating only the coupler in the middle.
  • Opens and closes easily as many times as needed without damaging hoses.
  • No more need to cut expensive hoses to get them out.
  • 8-sided nut on adapters and grip ribs on coupler barrel make turning easy, by hand or with standard wrenches.
  • Unique 2-barb design provides superior connection between adapter and hose, with room for two hose clamps.
  • Barbs fit marine hoses – they don't have to be ground off.
  • Assembly holds 35 PSI hand-tight with teflon tape, over 100 PSI cranked down with paste.
  • One adapter is available with a threaded end instead of barbed, for connection to other NPT threaded parts or fittings.
  • Parts can be locked closed so they can't vibrate loose using seizing wire, cotter pins etc. in flange holes.
  • Perforations in flanges can be used for a pin spanner where space is too tight for a wrench.
  • Made of 20% glass-reinforced Dow Isoplast, an exceptionally tough, rigid polyurethane material designed for metals replacement.
  • Material exceeds ABYC standards for strength of materials used in seacocks.
  • Isoplast has extremely high impact resistance.
  • The material is dimensionally stable in humid environ-ments - doesn’t absorb water and lose strength as nylon does. Can be used with metal fittings or parts.
  • Parts are unaffected by saltwater, gasoline, diesel, clorox and many chemicals.
  • Threaded components are compatible with most commercially available threaded products.
  • Compact size is significantly smaller than other coupling assemblies of similar internal diameter.
  • An alignment arrow on each flange shows proper placement of the parts during installation.
  • Pilots on threaded ends of adapters facilitate positioning.
  • An arrow and “OPEN” on the coupler, raised so they can be felt even if they can’t be seen, points the way to open or disconnect the assembly.
  • The assembly is currently available in 1-1/2 inch.
  • 1-1/2 inch adapters available separately, barb or nipple, the best non-bronze marine fittings on the market.

What Is It Made Of?

TURNCOUPLE® fittings are made of a strong, tough and highly impact-resistant material called Isoplast, from Dow. A 50-50 mix of Isoplast 202EZ and 202LFG40 is used to achieve a 20% long glass loading.

The strength of this material exceeds by a large margin the ABYC standards for plastics used in seacocks and through-hulls. Isoplast does not absorb moisture as nylon does. It maintains its strength and shape in the presence of humidity, or immersed in water. Because of this dimensional stability, fittings made of Isoplast can be used with metal parts or equipment. In fact, Isoplast was developed as a metals replacement material. Isoplast is unaffected by saltwater, gasoline, diesel, fuel additives, clorox and many other chemicals

How Was It Designed?

Schedule 80 Standards were used to develop the dimensions of the TURNCOUPLE fittings. The threads are made according to ASTM specifications for NPT threads. The coupler and adapters are embossed with features that assist in connection and disconnection, and these features are raised enough that they can be felt even if the fittings are installed in a place that is difficult to see.

  • An arrow, and the word OPEN, on the coupler, indicate the direction to rotate it to open or disconnect the assembly.
  • Triangular marks on all flanges point to the beginning of the threads. The marks on the coupler and adapters are aligned at installation. This is significant because it assures that the coupler will close and seal on both adapters at the same time.
  • A nut-shaped portion on each adapter allows for stabilizing with a wrench if necessary.
  • Ribs on the coupler help to grip and turn it.
  • "R" or "L" on the adapters and each end of the coupler indicate left- and right-hand threads. These must be matched up when installing.

Why Do I Need TURNCOUPLE® Assemblies?

  • Cruising offshore? Use TURNCOUPLE® assembly in closed position on a head seacock.
  • Cruising in a no-discharge zone? The TURNCOUPLE® is a perfect solution for making your head system legal. Just switch to capped position for compliance with discharge regulations in protected waters.
  • Alternative arrangement using two TURNCOUPLE® assemblies to completely separate the Y-valve from the seacock, for compliance with strictest regulations.
  • Clogged hose? A TURNCOUPLE® at each end lets you remove and reinstall hoses easily for cleaning.
  • When did you lube that seacock last? A TURNCOUPLE® assembly would simplify access.
  • Alternative arrangement using two TURNCOUPLE® assemblies to completely separate the Y-valve from the seacock, for compliance with strictest regulations.
