~ WELCOME ABOARD :: Greetings from the Captain

It's a slippery slope folks! Now that we've awarded our first "Win a Shopping Spree!" drawing for a $100 credit at ShipStore.com we can't wait to give away another. Fortunately for you two more shopping sprees will be awarded soon.

At the end of February we'll randomly select another surprise winner from our subscriber list. But if you're not content to sit on your duff and wait around for Lady Luck to smile upon you, then stack the odds in your favor! Send us a submission for our "Name the Sale" contest described later on in this email, and you could soon be selecting $100 worth of free merchandise from ShipStore.com. Don't wait; the contest ends on January 31st.

Plenty of great submissions have been rolling in since we announced the contest in our last issue, and we're excited to receive your final entries soon so that we can make our selection.

One other very important note, the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum (LCMM, http://www.lcmm.org) in Vergennes, Vermont is looking for boat donations to help fund their popular youth programs. Check out there website to see the exciting work they are doing such as the popular Champlain Discovery program and the Champlain Longboats program. Neat people; neat programs; neat cause. Check them out. And if you have a vessel that you would like to donate, or if you know someone who might, please contact npatch@lcmm.org or call 802-475-2022 x113.

Okay, folks, that's a wrap. If you haven't sent us your clever suggestion(s) for the "garage sale", then email your entries to editor@shipstore.com before the end of January. If your submission is chosen, we'll reward you with $100 shopping spree!

~ CAPTAIN'S TIP :: Enough About the Weather

Welcome back, and, no, don't worry, I'm not going to comment on the weather. Jim and I shared a chuckle last week about the number of references we've made to the weather. Sort of like those water cooler comments: "Windy out, hunh?" or "How 'bout that humidity?" or "She's a beaut when the sun's out like that..."

Maybe it's our boater psyches, always tuned into the weather patterns. Hypersensitive to meteorological changes. Or maybe it's a North Country thing. We have four seasons more markedly distinct than just about anyplace I've ever been. Or maybe it's just my personal appreciation for a long-overdue return to country living after four years in the city. Who knows?

But, to elude predictability, I'll skip the weather. Sort of... It's not totally avoidable after all. I mean, I'm sitting on the train, heading down to New York City for the Rangers-Bruins game, and there beyond my window is the Hudson River, mile after mile of ice and snow. I've just mentioned to my brother who's seated beside me, that it'll be some time before the boats and barges will be navigating the river again, then, out of the blue, a barge the size of Madison Square Garden appears. A red tug labors away, trying to break it free of the Hudson's icy grip.

Moments later we whiz past a fleet of tethered iceboats, tri-bladed wind/sail-powered racers that skim across the ice's surface at exhilarating speeds. I've never sailed an iceboat, but they're not an uncommon site flashing across Westport's frozen Northwest Bay. Frozen for almost two weeks now, the Vermont and New York shores seem to have grown closer. Ice fishermen pull their shanties out onto the ice, and temporary "villages" appear.

My houseguests this weekend seemed to be almost as thrilled snowshoeing across the bay they water-skied across during their last visit as they were the previous day downhill skiing at Whiteface Mountain. Their wonder helps to remind me what an extraordinary range of conditions we enjoy on Lake Champlain. But wait... STOP! I'm doing it again! Albeit circuitously, I've permitted the weather to propel my reflections.

Apologies, readers, I'll try harder next time. I had intended to mention only briefly that Lake Champlain had frozen, that we've been hard at work cutting through the ice to set up ice-eaters, and that this cold-snap (there it is, an overt reference to the weather!) has prompted us to include a great "super saver" deal on an ice-eater in our newsletter specials. Folks, there's no better way to protect your docks, piers, boathouses, and even in-water stored boats than these modern ice-eaters. By far the superior alternative to bubblers, these devices circulate warmer subsurface water up to the surface to inhibit ice formation. Like your dock and love your boat? Save both the easy way!

There you have it, a failed attempt to avoid mentioning the weather. I'll try again next issue, and with a little luck and encouragement I plan to succeed. And by then, we'll have chosen a winner for the "clean out the warehouse to make room for new products" sale. Have you sent us your suggestions for a name?
