~ WELCOME ABOARD :: Greetings from the Captain

Hello again and welcome back. The winner for ShipStore.com's February "Win a Shopping Spree!" drawing is Joseph Primanti! Congratulations. We look forward to helping you decide how to spend your $100.00 credit at ShipStore.com.

Last time I gave you the good news about Shipstore.com's business virtually doubling during 2003, and I promised to thank you all by providing you with amazing service, products and web shopping experiences every time you visit us. Our friendly staff is happily and eagerly improving thousands of ShipStore.com shoppers' experiences, and we've just added anther 3,100 new items, bringing us to a current grant total of 56,757 different products in our inventory.

I've put together some amazing deals for you below, and I want to mention two specifically. First of all, bottom paint. I know, it's not a flashy, inspiration buy, but since it's still early, I want to offer you an unbeatable, can't-afford-to-wait-until-later sale on one of the boating necessities. We've slashed Interlux Fiberglass BottomKote from $89.99/gallon to $67.99/gallon. I can't afford to keep prices this low for long, so order now. Another super sale item, and far sexier than bottom paint, is the Davis Wind Scribe. This ultrasonic wind meter which uses patented technology to accurately gauge wind speed is one cool gadget, or as the French say, a "hyper-cool" gadget! Which brings me to my last news...

What do we do in the North Country during the boating "off season"? We travel, of course! This fall I zipped my family off to Paris for a whirlwind culture and gourmet food fix. You can read the story and view over four dozen photographs at http://e-margaux.com/en/story/veterans-day-in-paris/ if you want a little vicarious escapism.

~ CAPTAIN'S TIP :: Cams, Cams, Cams!

So, here's the scoop. I just finished eating lunch at McQueen's in "midtown Westport" with Mark, our webmaster-slash-techie-magician, and he told me the whole story about The Owl Cam ( http://www.theowlcam.com ). About the Tyto alba, more commonly know as the common barn owl, currently starring in the coolest "reality" program around. No, I'm not referring to the latest prime time sequel, "Raptor Survivor", I'm talking about the one and only website documenting a California barn owl's every breath!

Okay, I'll slow down. Remember the last issue of the Beacon? (If you missed it, you can check it out at http://www.shipstore.com/ss/HTML/NEWS/NEWSbeacon006.html .) I explained the two cams accessible from the ShipStore.com homepage. Both offer you the chance to check out Lake Champlain from the dock of the Westport Marina, but the views are different. The Fuel Dock Cam (the one on the right of the home page) points roughly southeast and the Main Marina Cam (the one on the left) points roughly north. Or rather, POINTED, I guess I should say. It no longer does.

You see, the Main Marina Cam is a remote control SiteZap cam, allowing website visitors to "drive" the camera's orientation and zoom by using a user-friendly control panel found at http://thecam.westportmarina.com/flash/default.html . You can turn the camera in different directions and explore winter at the Westport Marina. It had frozen up and for some time had simply been showing the northern view I described in the last issue. Until Mark (remember Mark?) flew in from California for a little visit. He brought some of his techie magic to bear, and with help from Neil (Shipping & Receiving) and Gary (Inflatables Technician, Maintenance, and all-around-fix-it-guy), they got the cam back into tip-top shape once again. So now you can direct the camera via remote control to give you an up-close and personal view of whatever you please. (However an early thaw has chased the ice fishermen off of the lake, so you can't spy on them!)

You can imagine my glee (you don't get many chances to use that word in a newsletter) when I heard the good news. One thing lead to another, and before I could utter, "an owl cam?", I had received a hyperlink to visit Mark's latest creative venture, a website chronicling the every move of barn owls nesting in his California office/studio building (an historic Benicia Arsenal). The story goes like this. The owls had taken up residence several years ago, entering the commercial warehouse through an exhaust vent. In due course, an upstairs tenant in the building decided to accommodate the owls more safely and comfortably in their very own custom owl condominium. All was fine until Mark and his crew of techie wizards stumbled upon the idea of installing a discreet cam in the nesting box. They secured an infrared nightvision color camera permitting 24 hour access and installed it in the box. And now, with over 7,000 admirers and curious web surfers dropping in for daily visits, this distinguished owl is quite likely the first owl ever to be watched from around the world as she lives, loves, mates, lays eggs (she's now sitting happily, warmly on her eggs) and hopefully soon begins parenting a rambunctious brood of baby owls.

So, there you have it. One webcam issue has lead to another. And since I'm not likely to get on about cams again any time soon, I've compiled a few links to other cool cams related, if tangentially, to our "ShipStore.com world". First of all, Jim's mother, Dee, emailed us all a link to the National Weather Service - Burlington Vermont wep bage which you can visit at http://www.erh.noaa.gov/btv/ if you want access to several different local cams. The text link for cameras is in the left column part-way down the page. Dee wrote, "Click on "Cameras" and you get a map. Click on named places and you get views, such as Olympic venues, downtown Burlington, Whiteface, Basin Harbor... It was fun to visually hop around the area. Bob wrote to weather bureau and gave them permission to use our web cams..." And you know what? They added our cam. See if you can find it. (And, if you're wondering who Bob is, you'll find out soon in an upcoming staff bio, or you can scan down the page found at http://www.westportmarina.com/about/index.html .)

Two more cams (both available through the previous site) that you should visit are the live lake view cam at the Basin Harbor Club across Lake Champlain in Vermont which is available at http://www.basinharbor.com/viewsofharbor.asp and HazeCam's cam for Burlington, Vermont which is available at http://www.hazecam.net/burlington.html . This cam, mounted on the Old Mill at the University of Vermont offers an interesting view of Burlington, Lake Champlain and Bigelow Mountain (located on the far side of the lake near Port Kent, New York) if the day is clear.

That's a wrap, folks. Enjoy spying on our world, and be sure to check out the megadeals that Jim has for you below.
