~ WELCOME ABOARD: Greetings from the Captain

Seems like summer was just beginning and now it's almost the 4th of July! How does that happen?

The excitement is building as we count down the days... only two weeks until Independence Day. In preparation, I've had George share some important flag flying guidelines. Hope you find them useful.

And how about a new contest? It's time for the First Annual Independence Day Photo Contest. Pull out your camera and start snapping away. I'm going to reward the best 4th of July photo with a $100 shopping spree at ShipStore.com. That's right, email your favorite photo(s) to editor@shipstore.com before July 21st to be eligible, and we'll announce the winner in the August 7th issue of the Beacon. See the instructions at the end of this email.

That's it for now. Have a great Independence Day.

Captain Jim

~ CAPTAIN'S TIP: July 4th Special

With July 4th just around the corner, our minds have turned to things patriotic which in Westport, NY may be just a little different than in your neck of the woods. Although we will be able to enjoy a traditional Independence Day parade along Main Street on Sunday, July 4th, a long-standing tradition dictates that the fireworks display will not be the same evening.

For many years our small Adirondack town has maximized the "bang for our fireworks buck" by celebrating early. Fireworks will be launched from the Lee Park beach located next to the Westport Marina on July 3rd! That's right, by enjoying a premature pyrotechnics extravaganza we are able to stretch our budget by not competing with all of the towns and cities who insist on a July 4th fireworks display. So, I guess you could say that the frugal, cost-saving philosophy which has lead to ShipStore.com's success is not unique to us. It must be in the Westport water.

But good fiscal sense is only part of the equation. We get to celebrate an Independence Day double header every year! Since we'll be watching the fireworks in Westport on Saturday, we can jump into our boats on Sunday evening and head up Lake Champlain to Basin Harbor or Burlington and watch them all over again. How's that for patriotic?

And speaking of patriotic, how about a quick brush-up on flag etiquette. Come Independence Day we love to see the Stars and Stripes blowing in the wind, right? But do we know our p's and q's of US flag laws and regulations? Captain Jim suggested that I pass along a few important guidelines and customs governing the display and use of the flag.

Unless the flag is specifically designed for inclement weather, it should only be flown in good conditions. When the flag is flown, it must always be lit, whether by sunlight during the day or by artificial light at night. When raising and lowering the flag, no part of it may touch the ground, and when storing the flag, it should be neatly and ceremoniously folded. The flag should be cleaned and/or mended as needed, and in the event of damage or excessive wear, the flag should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.

A flag flown upside down may be used as a distress signal in the event of extreme danger to life or property. Captain Jim recounts a story as a child when he and his family were rescued by the Coast Guard after signaling for assistance by flying an upside down flag. With this one exception, the flag should never be flown upside down or dipped to any person or thing. When the flag is displayed with other flags, the US flag should always be flown at the center and at the highest point of the group.

What about flag placement for events? Imagine the flag in motion at a parade or event. The flag should be at the right hand side of the formation as it moves. For example, on a stage, the "event" would be moving towards the audience, and therefore the flag would be oriented on the right side of the stage when facing audience (or on the left side of the audience).

Did you know all of that? And there's plenty more. Visit you favorite online search engine and search for "US flag etiquette" or "US Flag Law" and you'll discover extensive regulations, customs and etiquette for how to fly your Independence Day flag with pride.

Until next time, have a great 4th of July.
