~ WELCOME ABOARD: Greetings from Captain Jim

Ever catch yourself feeling like you're becoming one of your parents? One minute you're looking at yourself in the mirror, brushing your teeth or shaving, and suddenly you think, "That's my dad looking back at me!" Despite the occasional suggestion to the contrary from my wife and friends, I'm pretty certain that I'm not actually becoming my father. But I have to admit, our minds do work alike. And when he proposed that we include a newsletter article about lightning, well, I figured I'd better run the idea past our Editor first to make sure this wasn't just a "father-son" sort of thing. George liked the idea, thought that fleshing out the danger and safety issues around lightning made plenty of sense for the thousands of boaters who read The Beacon. So we went ahead with it.

I hope you enjoy the read. Dad was many years a doctor and professor, so if you feel like he's getting too technical for you, just skip to the next paragraph. But make sure you don't miss anything that could save your life!

And speaking of saving your life, it's time for another "Clear the Deck" Sale! These amazing deals are truly exceptional. They may not be able to save your life, but they sure will save your check book. These are "give-'em-away" prices in order for us to clear off the shelves and make way for autumn product. In many instances, we brought the prices to sub-clearance level because there are only a few items in stock. Act quickly, or you may miss your chance.

Watch out for lightning and enjoy the "Clear the Deck" Sale!

Captain Jim

~ CAPTAIN'S TIP: Lightning 101

As a volunteer spotter for the National Weather Service (NWS) in Burlington, Vermont, I received their newsletter this week. It has an article on Lightning Hazards from which much of this note is taken.

Lightning strikes up to 400 and kills an average of 73 people in the US every year, more than are killed by tornadoes or hurricanes! Because they are not mass destruction events, they do not get much media attention. Some 40% or more of these deaths are related to water recreation. Many who are struck do survive, but are left with long term disabilities including memory loss, sleep disorders, numbness, dizziness, joint stiffness, muscle spasms and weakness, and depression. As boaters, we need to take safety precautions.

What is a thunderstorm? Very simply, Moist, unstable air with a lift from a cold front or mountains, develops electrically charged particles of water drops or ice crystals. These charges separate, generally the positives rising to the top, negative ones to the lower surface of the clouds. The earth surface is generally positive, and the lightning is a discharge of energy between earth and cloud. The temperature in the cloud may reach 15,000 to 60,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Rapid expansion of air caused by heat followed by a similarly rapid collapse caused by cooling causes thunder. You can't have a thunderstorm without lightning. You just may not see the lightning.

Light travels faster than sound which travels about one mile every five seconds. Count the seconds between the flash and the thunder, divide by five and you can guess how many miles you are from the storm. Lightning can strike five or more miles away. If you count thirty seconds or less between the flash of lightening and the resultant thunderclap, you are in danger. If you can hear thunder at all, you are in striking distance. You should take safe cover. Wait thirty minutes after the last clap of thunder before going out again. Lightning can strike before, during or after the rain. Simply put, if you are in or on the water and hear thunder, get off the water as fast as possible!

Shortly after we bought Westport Marina (1982) Capt. Jim and I went to a marina management school at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. We heard a fascinating lecture by a professor of Electrical Engineering on lightning which was his hobby. He told us an enclosed building with a curved metal roof is one of the safest shelters. Westport Marina and The Galley Restaurant are exactly that! We welcome you to take shelter with us. Check us out at this link:

What about lightning protection for boats? This area is somewhat controversial and complicated. In fact, it's often misunderstood. The saying that such-and-such "is like a lightning rod", an expression intended to suggest that such-and-such draws or attracts "lightning", well captures this misunderstanding. A proper lightning protection system for boat or building should act to lower the height of the positive electricity and deter a lightning strike.

If the top of your mast is properly grounded, the "cloud" hopefully will choose to go to a higher point. Most experts talk of a 60 degree cone of protection around a properly grounded mast or antenna. If lightning does strike your boat, then you want the ground wiring to lead the bolt safely to ground, often to a metal ground plate or shaft and props. Some say all metal fittings (such as life line stanchions, shrouds, etc.) should be bonded together. Others disagree. We have seen sailboats on moorings that had literally hundreds of tiny holes in the fiberglass and rudder near the waterline where the lightning punched through to ground. Most agree that thru hull fittings should not be grounded, as they might melt, allowing water to flood the boat.

What do you do in the boat? Ben Franklin, who invented the lightning rod, wrote that the safest place in a storm is suspended in the middle of a room in a silk hammock. I am sorry, we could not find silk hammocks to sell at ShipStore.com! You should, however, stay in the middle of the cabin and try not touch any metal objects, including steering wheel, throttle or radio. Do not touch two objects that are grounded at the same time. For example, if you must steer, keep your other hand off the throttle or spotlight. If struck, the current might go from hand to hand. Phone use is the leading cause of indoor lightning injury. A cell phone is the safest phone to use in a thunderstorm. Do not stand on deck. Get as low as possible. Don't be a human lightning mast. Keep hands and legs out of the water. Lower the antenna if is not part of the lightning protection bond system. Divers are safest if they go deep, instead of staying on the surface. If you are interested in some other good tips, check out the National Weather Service's Lightening Safety guidelines at this link:

Be safe out there!

~ CAPTAIN'S SPECIALS: "Clear the Deck" Sale, Part I

Okay, folks, here's the long awaited Clear the Deck Summer Sale! Capt. Jim admits, "I cut my throat on the pricing on these items." And that means that they'll go fast, fast, fast! But don't worry, we'll add more items as stock is depleted, and we'll add some special "heart-stoppers" in the next newsletter. Due to the fact that many of these items are available in only very limited quantities, there are a few guidelines to keep in mind:

1. All orders subject to stock on hand.
2. All Clear the Decks items (look for "*CTD" in the blue item title bar) are final sales unless defective from the factory.
3. There will be no backorders. "Ship or cancel" policy in effect.
4. First Come, First Served. (Note: This could mean you order an item which shows in stock, but someone places an order just ahead of you and you are unfortunately out of luck. We'll email any shortage notices to the customers promptly and void those items from the order.)
5. As items sell out, we'll remove them from the list. We'll keep the list as current as possible and will be changing it daily through Labor Day.
6. Want to know what's currently available? You can search for the most current list of clearance items at this link:
