=============================================================
You may have noticed the message at the top of our website this week:
"Kite Tube video now online! Defy gravity with summer's wildest towable..."
Sure, I know it's approaching that time of year when we should be thinking about bottom paint and teak cleaner, but this new inflatable ski tube is totally hijacked my brain. Frankly, I'm not able to concentrate on much of anything else!
Let me explain. Remember the Sevylor Manta Ray?
http://www.shipstore.com/SS/HTML/SEV/SEVST3950.html
It was last summer's hottest inflatable pull toy. Watch the Manta Ray video to understand why. In fact, it was so popular, nobody could keep it in stock. At ShipStore.com we had to place Sevylor backorder requests from early summer onward just to keep up with the demand.
The Manta Ray's 13 foot wide wingspan enables the towable to lift off and hover over the water. That's right, no longer were marine towables just for skidding along the water's surface; the era of soaring towables had begun.
Once Sevylor threw down the gauntlet, it was only a matter of time before SportsStuff followed suit with what promises to be a serious contender, the SportsStuff Wego Kite Tube.
http://www.shipstore.com/SS/HTML/SPO/SPO535000.html
If the Manta Ray video quickened your pulse, then watching the Wego Kite Tube video will feel like dancing the tango with a defibrillator! It's awesome, so much that I watched it twice.
SportsStuff refers to the Wego Kite Tube as a "next generation action towable" and promises that it'll take you to "a whole new level of excitement". The video supports the claims pretty well. Slightly smaller than the Manta Ray, the Wego Kite Tube is only (only?!?!) ten feet across, but it somehow looks more efficient and more stable despite the fact that it's shaped like a massive disk instead of a wide winged sea creature. Unlike the riders in the Manta Ray video who sometimes wobble or dive as they soar, the Wego Kite Tube riders seem stable and confident. And they soar as high as anyone could ever even dream of wanting to soar. I want to do it: "Whip across the water like a deck tube, or fly through the air like a bird! Experience the thrill of flight as you rise above the water, reaching incredible heights, leaving nothing but adrenaline in your wake!"
I'd love to hear from any of you with experience of either one or both. I think it's time somebody did a side-by-side comparison...

~ CAPTAIN'S TIP: Captain Jim Co-Directs School Play
=============================================================
Do you have plans this Thursday, Friday or Saturday? How about dropping by Westport Central School for the drama club's spring production? For the second time Captain Jim and his ever-so-dramatic wife, Gigi, are co-directing our local school play.
I thought you might enjoy reading the cover story from our local newspaper.
CLASSIC COMEDIC PLAY CONVEYS TIMELESS MESSAGE
by Whitney Jackson (from the Valley News, March 25, 2006)
The Westport drama club will present "You Can't Take It With You" for its spring production.
The show will be presented Thursday, March 30, Friday, March 31 and Saturday, April 1. All shows starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $6, with a family maximum of $15.
"You Can't Take It With You"relates the humorous encounter between a conservative family and the crazy household of Grandpa Vanderhof. Grandpa's family of idiosyncratic individualists amuse with their energetic physical antics and inspire with their wholehearted pursuit of happiness. The play, written by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart in 1936, received the Pulitzer Prize.
" This play was written in the 1930s, but the themes and humor or appropriate today," said co-director the bottom Gigi Carroll. "Money and working hard are important, but you need to know what makes you happy."
Senior Conor McCormick was looking forward to the production.
"It's a lot different than the last few years. It's a lot more comedic," said McCormick.
"We all wanted to have a change, and this fits that," senior Owen Gibbs agreed. "Everything that could go wrong, does go wrong. That's probably the funniest thing."
Senior Alex Sherman said that everyone in the audience should find a character to relate to. She said that the play was challenging students to push their limits as actors.
The cast of 19 students comes from grades 7-12. This year will mark the first time students handle lights, sounds and special effects by themselves, along with a student in the role of stage manager.
Tenth grader Alyssa Carroll said she saw the increased responsibilities as a challenge, but said it's been fun.
"In live theater you never know what's going to happen, backstage is where everyone lets loose," said Alyssa.
Karlee Vaughn will handle lighting while Addison Mehr is in charge of special effects and sound.
The play's cast includes quotes and Louise McGoldrick, Lili Carroll, Conor McCormick, Chris Gibbs, Covey Fields, Dan Linder, Alex Sherman, Owen Gibbs, Spencer Mehr, Karina Fink, Leah Bedoian, Valentina Rodriguez, Kelsey Carroll, Alan Ware, Liz Vanderhoof, Jesse Vaow, Anna Finucane and Michelle Quaglietta.
"We like the play because it has a strong ensemble cast, allowing each person the ability to develop their character's personality. It is also funny in spite of being written 70 years ago," said co-director Jim Carroll.
And you thought Captain Jim only knew about boats!?!?
