Did you know that May 20-26, 2006 is National Safe Boating Week? www.safeboatingcampaign.com The theme this year is "Boat Smart. Boat Safe. Wear It!"

When you consider the following facts, it's easy to see why boating safety is such an important topic:

"More than 70,000,000 Americans enjoy recreational boating each year. Annual boat registrations have increased steadily from just over 10 million in 1988 to nearly 12.8 million in 2004. During this same time period, boating-related fatalities have decreased, due in part to increased use of life jackets, or personal flotation devices (PFD)."

That's pretty impressive, and the Safe Boating Campaign aims to ensure that it stays that way by heightening awareness about the importance of wearing a life jacket. According to the cdc.gov website , "431 lives could have been saved in 2004 if all boaters had worn life jackets." Seems like a no-brainer, but it's amazing how often boaters skip this one simple safety practice.

Here's a summary of the safety tips they offer:

- Always wear a PFD when boating
- Avoid drinking alcohol when boating
- Complete a boating safety course
- Participate in the Vessel Safety Check (VSC) Program http://www.uscgboating.org/safety/vsc.htm
- Avoid carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning
