~ WELCOME ABOARD: Of Summer, Slalom-ing and Turtle Crashing
=============================================================
Between rain, high water and workload, summer's been unusually elusive this
year. The calendar assured me that it had returned, and soaring ShipStore sales
seemed to evidence the same unlikely fact, but half way through the fairest
season I finally experienced my first "real" summer day.
A sunup waterski before heading off to work, and a slalom sundowner before
settling in for supper. There's no finer way to bookend your days in my
estimation. Especially when the heat and humidity levels read like the middle
school honor roll! And then yesterday, the icing on the cake: a late afternoon
sail on the Hobie Cat. Suddenly things look good...
But before you become green with envy, let me complete the sketch of my simply
sensational summer days. Think turtle. Now think of the odds of hitting a turtle
in the middle of Lake Champlain with a Hobie Cat. If it's not sounding
altogether too unlikely too imagine, let me throw in the clencher. Ready? The
rudder snapped in two!
That's right. Yesterday afternoon my wife and I were sailing west by southwest
between Basin Harbor, Vermont and Rock Harbor, New York at a nice clip and
suddenly, "Bang!" The catamaran shuddered and slowed. My eyes darted to the
source of the noise, the starboard rudder which had sheered off roughly at the
waterline and sunk. My wife pointed at our wake, "It was a turtle! See the
turtle?"
We were moving quickly enough that I missed the turtle, but she described a
relatively large painted turtle, arms and legs working in overdrive. He seemed
uninjured, as far as she could tell, but it didn't prevent her from worrying
into evening about whether or not the turtle had faired better than the Hobie.
Fortunately we were able to cripple back to shore on a single rudder.
So summer's back, but with it has come one of the more uncanny Lake Champlain
stories in my experience. Can you imagine hitting a turtle in several hundred
feet of water with the rudder of a Hobie Cat? If you've ever sailed a catamaran
you can appreciate how little contact you even have with the water. And until I
can order and install a replacement rudder, it'll be even less!
Cheers,

~ CAPTAIN'S TIP: July 4th Photo Contest Winners!
=============================================================
It was challenging to choose our favorite photograph for the 4th of July photo
contest, so challenging in fact that we're acknowledging three "runners-up"! So
many wonderful photographs capturing highlights from Independence Day parades,
fireworks displays, family picnics, etc. It reminded me that this holiday means
so many different things to different people and is celebrated so many different
ways despite the fact that it's celebrated by all Americans. It was a refreshing
reminder.
Without further ado, I'd like to announce the winner of the ShipStore.com 2006
Independence Day photo contest. Susan Bandrowsky's "fourth of july, 2006" is far
more than an impressively executed photo; it's a window into the celebrations of
our youth, when eating our first corn on the cob was as spectacular event as
watching the fireworks. It's practically brimming with contentment! It also
reminded me that part of the poignancy of this holiday is family and future.
Call it nostalgia and optimism in one handsome package. I hope you all enjoy
this photo, and Susan you've won yourself $100 credit at ShipStore.com so send
me an email and we'll explain how to redeem your reward. Congratulations and
thanks a lot!
Now for those of you who might be a little surprised that we've selected a
somewhat unconventional photo for the contest, worry not. We've also selected
three awesome second place winners who've captured the more traditional
snapshots of our nation's favorite holiday. V.G. Bond's dramatic fireworks image
(left) and Beth Elder's "Fireworks Display" (right) transport us back to the
night when we sat at the edge of our seat wondering how big the bang would be,
how colorful the next explosion. And book ended by these pyrotechnic flowers,
Nan Moore's "Support Our Troops", a crisp, clear image of a bald eagle, reminds
us that many Americans are currently employed in the service of our great
nation. We invite all three to contact us by email with their shipping addresses
and we'll send them a ShipStore.com t-shirt.
If you didn't get your picture chosen, don't be discouraged. We'll run the
contest again next year. And thanks again to everyone who submitted photos.
