The inspiration for SOS, Inc. occurred over 16 years ago. On Thanksgiving Day a friend of Scott Swanby, Gary Ravlin, drowned in the Snake River while placing decoys. His jet boat was swamped and he was wearing waders. His bulky foam lifejacket was stowed, as it always was, in the boat locker far from reach. Gary went right to the bottom and left Scott Swanby to relay the terrible news to his wife and children.

As a result, a mission to find a lifejacket that was comfortable for active sports men and women was launched. The PFD had to be so comfortable that people would wear it all the time. A sentinel to the unexpected that Gary fell victim to. Amazing as it sounds, a lifejacket was found being manufactured in Meridian, Idaho, by a little ma and pa operation. They called the company SOSPENDERS®.
