~ WELCOME ABOARD: Snow in April and Special Effects

Up until last night it felt like springtime had arrived in Westport. Sunshine, blue sky, warm-ish weather, snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) blooming in the yard and fishermen venturing out onto Lake Champlain. Of course the calendar claims that spring is here, but the meteorologists offered a belated April Fool's trick instead.

Snow. Wet, sloppy, slushy snow. How's that for a bad joke? I bet the snowdrops are none too pleased! The pea soup fog is swallowing the boats stored outside my window so that all I can make out are fuzzy blurs of blue and black shrink wrap. And it's cold. That sort of damp cold that creeps into your clothes and makes you want to crawl back into bed and hibernate for another month.

Fortunately, not all my news is gloomy. I attended the Westport Central School drama club's production of "You Can't Take It With You" on Saturday. I mentioned last week that Captain Jim and his wife, Gigi, had directed the play, but I neglected to mention that their daughters were both in the play, one as an understated and endearing actress and the other as stage manager. But the family connection doesn't stop there. Captain Jim's niece (the eldest daughter of Westport Marina's Lane and Larry Carroll) was one of the leads! And Larry's son was selling concessions during intermission... Did we ever mention that Westport's a small town?

Although I'd felt compelled to see the play mostly to be supportive, I was happily surprised. I laughed from beginning to end, marveling at the subtlety and poise of many of the performances. Okay, so that sounded sort of stuffy, like I was trying to compose a fancy phrase for The New Yorker. Truth is, I had a blast. The show was entertaining and high energy. Captain Jim even managed to incorporate myriad special effects including multiple fireworks explosions throughout the play. And his audio/lighting "master control" booth (laid out across the top of the bleachers at the rear of the auditorium) looked like it had been hijacked from a hip Off Broadway venue.

In fact, Jim now owns enough state-of-the-art AV equipment (for the simple purpose of donating his tech time to local theatre groups) that I suggested we might want to start experimenting with podcasting. Now THAT would be a good way to pass this sleeting, raining, snowing, foggy day. Jim's thoughts on the matter: "On Wednesday of this week, at two minutes and three seconds after 1:00 in the morning, the time and date will be: 01:02:03 04/05/06. That won't ever happen again." O-k-a-y-y-y... Thanks, Jim.
