~ WELCOME ABOARD: Corn on the Cob & Perfect Ski Conditions

Sweet corn for dinner twice this week. One night I ate six ears by myself! I know, they have special support groups for people who do things like that. It's pretty embarrassing really, but it tasted so good, and we wait so long for that summertime delicacy.

And dogs love it too! Our Labrador retriever likes to have me hold the ear of corn by the ends, turning it slowly so that she can chew off all of the sweet, crisp kernels. Once she's made it back around to where she started, she inspects the cob to see if she missed any corn. She looks for all the world like a pampered kid, and smiles almost as wide.

In addition to corn on the cob, August in the North Country is the beginning of most garden harvests. We've been eating plump, acidic tomatoes for several weeks, as well as cucumbers, baby zucchini and lettuce. And after plenty of bizarre weather (a frost warning a little over a week ago?!?!) we're enjoying perfect weather: warm, sunny days and crisp, cool nights.

After unusually rough water during the first two weeks of August, Lake Champlain has calmed down, offering up silky smooth surfaces that beckon, "Put on your swimming trunks, strap on a slalom ski, and show us what you've got!" Or sometimes, "What's up, computer geek? Did you forget how to waterski?" Yes, it's true. Recently I've been driving my laptop more than the Ski Nautique. But not for long... I'm out of here!

~ CAPTAIN'S TIP: Late Summer Lightning Refresher
=============================================================

It's that time of year again. No, not just sweet corn and flat water. Thunderstorms seem to come with greater frequency this time of year, and it's worth refreshing you on several of the pointers in Captain Jim and Bob Carroll's Lightning lessons:

- Lightning can strike the same object/location twice.
- Statistically, you are more likely to be killed by a falling coconut than a lightning strike.
- Lightning strikes up to 400 and kills an average of 73 people in the US every year.
- 40% or more of these deaths are related to water recreation.
- From a personal safety standard, not touching metal is the biggest key.
- Stay in the center of the boat.
- If you count thirty seconds or less between a lightening flash and thunder, you're in danger!
- If you can hear thunder at all, you are in striking distance. You should take safe cover.
- Avoid using your VHF radio or anything else that uses the boat wiring.
- A cell phone is the safest phone to use in a thunderstorm.
